Eager and Young Minds of India Show Their Worth in Abhiyantriki 2014

An electric car that can go from 0 to 60 kmph in just 2.23 seconds, a formula racer which passed endurance tests in Germany – the world’s most difficult engineering based design event, the most fuel efficient vehicle to be which is capable of giving 350 Km/L and a Go-Kart which won the Skid Pad award in an international Go-Kart championship. These performance statistics will make you put your fingers in your mouth. If you think all these achievements belong to the top automotive companies, then just hold on to your breath. No, we are not talking of world’s top auto companies; these achievements have been bagged by none other than the eager and young minds of India at Abhiyantriki 2014.

The GEN-NEXT of India’s future engineers had put up an amazing display of their talent, skills and commitment towards automobile industry in the recently concluded exhibition ‘Abhiyantriki 2014’ at KJ Somaiya College of Engineering campus in Mumbai. Be it engineering excellence, designing skills or protecting the environment, India’s next generation is really passionate about their work and ready to take the responsibility. All teams which participated in the Abhiyantriki 2014 mainly comprise of current students from various engineering fields; supported by their seniors on their projects. Most of the parts required for the vehicle systems such as the chassis, suspension system, steering system etc. have been manufactured in-house by these students.

This prototype named B-150 was made in 2006 which was powered by a single cylinder 150cc auto-rickshaw petrol engine. Every year this model was upgraded with many features & naming it differently by its current team; has now evolved into the sophisticated Arion 2.0 version.

Team Orion has installed a 4 cylinder 599cc Honda CBR f4-i fuel-injected petrol engine in their latest model Arion 2.0; which is now a full-fledged formula racing car. Team Orion has participated in International design Competitions organised by Formula SAE and Formula Student Germany. Team Orion has received many awards including the Best Indian Team at the Formula Student Germany event.

Team ETA at Abhiyantriki 2014:

The Team ETA is another team participating in the Abhiyantriki 2014. This team has a dream of making India’s most fuel efficient vehicle. Team ETA had displayed their three-wheeled vehicle named J-14; short-form for Jugaad-14 and promoted it as ‘Because Mileage Car’.

The Jugaad-14 is a single-seater; which features a tiny 35cc petrol engine and has a top speed of 40 Km/h. This vehicle uses bicycle tyres with steering mounted controls for accelerator and brakes. The Jugaad-14, however, is capable of giving an astonishing mileage of 350 Km/L under test conditions.

Team Redshift Racing displayed their model named “RAUDR” in the Abhiyantriki 2014. RAUDR is an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) which participated in the inter-college design competition Baja SAE; organised by Society of Automotive Engineers. The participating teams are tasked to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the rough terrain and sometimes even water.

With competition’s rule of using the same engine by all the competing teams; makes it really challenging for participants. The “RAUDR” is powered by a 305cc 10-horsepower petrol engine donated by Briggs & Stratton Corporation. However, most parts such as the suspension and chassis including a functional Differential Assembly etc. were manufactured by the Team Redshift themselves. Team Redshift had participated in the all-terrain endurance competition held in South Africa.

The Team IIT Bombay Racing participated in the Abhiyantriki 2014 with their only electric vehicle named EVO 3.0. The EVO 3.0 is powered by a Lithium-Polymer 64 ampere-hour (Ah) battery and is capable of hitting 0 to 60 Km/h in just 2.23 seconds with a top speed of 86 Km/h. The EVO 3.0 has a range of about 25 kms when charged for about 30 minutes.

The EVO 3.0 is not just another electric car. A unique innovation is hidden in its drive-train. The EVO 3.0 features an Electric Differential mechanism; unlike mechanical as used in a conventional design. Got confused? But it’s true. This unique innovation is implemented in the EVO 3.0 by its creators.

While turning a vehicle, the wheels on the inner periphery need to rotate at slower speeds than the wheels on the outer periphery since the distance travelled by them is different. This function is performed by the differential gears in a conventional design by transferring the motion from one wheel to the other. However, the Team IIT Bombay Racing replaced the Differential mechanism by fitting an electric motor on each wheel and spinning them at different speeds. This truly is one of the most innovative ideas used in an automobile.

The Team GVA Motorsports participated in the exhibition with their unique Go-Kart design. This Go-Kart was built by GVA Motorsports with a tiny budget of only Rs.50,000/-. The Team GVA Motorsports’ Go-Kart model is powered by a 110cc Honda Activa scooter engine which has both kick and electric start options. While most of the parts such as chassis, suspension, steering are manufactured locally by GVA; other parts are borrowed from existing scooters and bikes.

This Go-Kart’s rear wheels feature a quite unique braking system which uses a Twin-Calliper Design – Two brake callipers mounted on a common brake disc. The brake callipers are connected to a fail-safe tandem master-cylinder in which if one brake line fails, the Go-Kart could still be controlled with the other brake line working. The Go-Kart also features an emergency switch which triggers a fire extinguisher in case the engine catches fire.

The Team GVA Motorsports has participated in an international Go-Kart championship event and has won the Skid Pad award. The Team GVA Motorsports was also ranked 11th in the All Asia Go-Kart competition held in Philippines.
